America's Most Livable Community: Tacoma-Pierce County, WA

Tacoma, the third largest city in Washington State, is named the "City of Destiny." And Pierce County is considered one of the most livable communities in the nation. Nestled at the shores of Commencement Bay and Puget Sound, we are known for our abundant sea life, towering mountain peaks and the natural beauty of our area.

Unfortunately, some of our citizens are ignoring their individual environmental responsibility. Allowing debris, household garbage, junk vehicles and solid waste to accumulate on private properties and vacant lots is not showing pride in our Pacific Northwest Heritage. As a community, we should all recognize that harming our environment is also harming ourselves. A clean environment, could make all the difference in our health and well being. Our quality of life and property values suffer when debris is improperly stored or deposited onto the ground, ignored and left to rot.

The welfare of our communities are dependent upon our ability to protect some of our most valued resources: the air we breath, the water we drink, and the land we inhabit. We can no longer afford to ignore the warning signs that are associated with poor waste management practices. How can you help? Proper storage, disposal or recycle of items such as, but not limited to, harmful household chemicals, leaking fluids from car parts, junk vehicles, demolition and construction debris, furniture, recyclable materials, tires, household garbage and medical waste can help protect the health and safety of our environment, and our most precious commodity - our children.
