      <P>Washington, Apr 24 (ANI): Researchers at Evergreen State =
College in=20
      Washington have discovered a virus in sheep that kills the =
food-poisoning=20
      bacterium E. coli O157:H7. </P>
      <P>The virus could help eliminate the bacterium in farm animals, =
greatly=20
      reducing the chance of human infections. O157:H7, a toxic strain =
of the=20
      normally harmless gut bug E. coli, is a major cause of food =
poisoning.=20
      Three-quarters of cases can be traced directly to livestock, which =
harbour=20
      the bug without becoming ill. Meat can be contaminated when the =
animals=20
      are slaughtered and manure can also be a source of infections, =
according=20
      to a report in New Scientist. </P>
      <P>Andrew Brabban and colleagues wanted to test different =
antibiotics to=20
      find those which would eliminate the bugs from farm animals. =
First, they=20
      had to infect sheep with E. coli. But they hit an unexpected =
problem: the=20
      bacteria just kept disappearing from the animals. </P>
      <P>It turned out that the sheep harbour a bacteria-killing virus, =
or=20
      bacteriophage, that infects certain E. coli strains. When the team =
tested=20
      the phage against the food-poisoning bug in the lab, they found it =
kills=20
      16 out of 18 toxic strains, the report said. </P>
      <P>"That includes all the big ones you have ever heard about," =
said=20
      Brabban. But the phage, christened CEV1, only kills 8 out of 73 =
harmless=20
      E. coli strains. Brabban now hopes to use the phage to wipe out =
O157:H7 in=20
      herds and flocks. </P>
      <P>In a small trial in sheep, the phage reduced numbers of the =
toxic=20
      bacterium by 99 percent in just two days. And using bacteriophages =
has all=20
      sorts of advantages. Phages are far more discriminating than =
antibiotics,=20
      so the natural microbial flora of animals' guts should not be =
affected.=20
      </P>
      <P>Also, while antibiotics are expensive and must be given to =
every=20
      animal, infecting just one animal with the CEV1 phage is likely to =
be=20
      enough to pass it to a whole herd and the numbers of the phage =
will rise=20
      exponentially as long as there are host bacteria left to infect, =
the=20
      report noted. </P>
      <P>What's more, the phage seems to persist in animals, suggesting =
it=20
      continues to replicate in a harmless E. coli strain after all the =
O157:H7=20
      bacteria have been destroyed. Finally, while bacteria can develop=20
      resistance as they do to antibiotics, the phage can out-evolve =
them, it=20
