excerpt FROM SALLY'S ARTIST STATEMENT: I was influenced by P. Adams Sitney’s idea of a visionary film and I believe some of my strongest, most personal work falls into this category. Going To My House reconstructs an experience I had when I was treated by a bomoh (spirit medium) in Malaysia. Your Willing Power (the film excerpted here) is a film that I made twice. This experimental documentary ostensibly about Thaipucam, a Hindu festival in Malaysia which features trance, piercing, and acts of self devotion is also a film that interrogates my role in the representation of other cultures. It also could be considered an example of experimental ethnography in that the film combines strong autobiographical themes with cultural study. ©2000 Sally J. Cloninger |
