WORKSHOP: Introduction to the MENO

By Don Finkel

Form groups of four. Make sure at least one person in each group has already read the Meno. Find a comfortable place to work and begin by introducing yourself.

1. (10 minutes for 1. & 2.) Ignoring the Meno for the moment, individually write down your instinctive and immediate answers to the following two questions:

a. Can virtue be taught?

b. Can virtue be learned?

2. Now write down two or three sentences giving the reasons for the answers you gave.

3. (5 mins.) Share your answers to questions 1 and 2 with your group and see what kind of agreement there is.

Discuss as a group, and try to agree on answers to the following 2 questions:

4. (5 mins.) Does Socrates think that questions (a) and (b) are essentially the same question, or does he think they are fundamentally different questions (consult p. 28)?

5. (10 mins.) Do you think Socrates is right regarding question 4. or not? Give reasons.
