STOPPED AT WALLULA GAP |
Where water velocities were highest, the floods eroded channels, many with scour depressions, and left ëscabsí or erosion remnants of Basalt - hence the name Channeled Scablands for eastern Washington.
Floodwaters coming across the Channeled Scablands were channeled through Wallula Gap. For several weeks as much as 200 cubic miles of water per day were delivered to a gap that could discharge less than 40 miles per day. Ponded water filled the Pasco basin and the Yakima and Touchet Valleys to form temporary Lake Lewis and for several days stopped and reversed the tributaries of the Columbia River.
