Off we go to the OR coast. Bring a lunch, snacks for consumption in the vans. I'd like to minimize the number of stops. Assemble along the sidewalk near the emergency phone in C-lot, near Sem II. See the packing list at right for more details.

Mike is bringing lots of organic apples for all to eat.

Collecting information for the area: There is no permit required for the Suislaw NF - the limit is 1 gallon with no more than 6 Matsutake (you must immediately cut 1/2" from base of stem).

I cannot find anything about Mushroom Collecting in nearby Cape Lookout State Park. If we go there there is a $3/vehicle day use fee.

Here's the only phone contact I can find for Camp Clark:

Here's the presentation schedule for your lichen/fungi ecology paper summaries and class presentations, which will occur on Tuesdays during the last hour of lab in both the morning and afternoon sessions.

Meet Monday at 8:30 AM for the field trip. Please bring walkie talkies, if you have them. Here's an updated packing list.

Tilth Producers of Washington’s annual conference, The Future of Farming, will be held Nov. 10-12, 2006 at the Red Lion at the Quay in Vancouver, Washington. Here's the registration form. It's due Friday Oct 20th.

The conference will build on three decades of efforts to transform agriculture in Washington State. Participants will present ideas, celebrate accomplishments and further strengthen the Tilth sustainable agriculture movement in the Pacific Northwest.

The fungal culture room is up and running with plates available in Lab I 064. Please put all isolation plates in bags and then on the shelves. Label with your name, date, species, etc.

Lichen/Mushroom of the Week
Please email Paul with any good digital photos (350k max). Include a Word file with your field notes, date, final key used for ID and your name.

Announcement:  Microscopic detail for your mushroom lab notebooks

The guidelines for your mushroom lab notebook that we gave you in the syllabus indicate that you should draw cross-sections of pileal and hymenial trama (or context, the vegetative “flesh” of the cap and gills) for each collection.

The characteristics of the pileal trama are not often distinctive and of use for identification. A nice thin section of a gill that clearly illustrates the orientation of the hyphae in the gill trama is devilishly difficult to achieve (although I encourage you to try it -- some people make quite good sections). Therefore, those drawings will be optional.

A feature that is often very important is the nature of the cap cuticle, or pileipellis.

Therefore, here are the revised guidelines for the microscopic drawings to accompany each of your mushroom collections:

  • Spores are required (including dimensions)
  • Cystidia of whatever type(s) are required (if the species has them)
  • Cap cuticle cross-section and/or “scalp” section is required if it is an essential feature for identifying your collection
  • Cross-sections of pileal and hymenial trama are optional

I hope this clarifies things -- if not, let me know. ST

The after-hours access lockboxes are in place on 3041, 3046, and 064. Please replace them immediately after opening the door.

If you intend to attend the Key Council foray at Deception Pass on 3-5 November, please get your registration forms in the mail ASAP (info is listed on the form) AND

send Steve an e-mail (by early Sunday) indicating you intend to attend so he can forward head-count info and we can look in to getting a TESC van for the weekend.

Readings for Week 5 -- Mycorrhizal Ecology I

I suggest you read the two Finlay papers first to get somewhat of an overview, then tackle the other two.

Key for Quiz 1, please conserve paper and read on-line if possible
