The Mismeasure of Man
To me The Mismeasure of Man was a book that took a long period of time to really get into. The first half of the book seemed really boring, yet I was able to sort through parts and get the main arguments of the book. In the mismeasure of man, Gould sets out on a path towards researching craniometry, which is the measurement of the skull to determine its characteristics as related to sex, race, or body type. Another thing Gould wanted to do was to find out why the study of craniometry will be helpful to scientist in the long run. His way of quantitive researching craniometry to me was definitely racist and unethical in many ways. He compared the behavior, social, and economic differences between many different types of groups, being race, class, and sex. There were many methods of quantitive research such as the craniometry, the study of bones of the skull. The study of eugenics, which is a philosophy that supports the improvement of human genetic traits through various forms of interventions. Race and intelligence were studied through intelligence test scores. In his research he figured out that IQ testing was a flaw because it was just a single number that did not mean much. Throughout his findings he had cemented data that he used but many times he found flaws in his research of craniology and the intelligence testing. This book opens eyes into the field of scientific research and I believe that this book could be used as an entrance into the science world of new findings and researching. With new findings and more scientific research, there will definitely be more scientific advances in the world to make it a better place. Now when doing my research, I will fully look back to all my factors dealing with the research to make sure that everything is working out right.
