SO, YOU WANT TO BE A TEACHER

FALL QUARTER PROJECT

STEP 1:Choose an educator, theorist, or philosopher whose work intrigues you.You can choose one from the list, or if you have another name, please check with your seminar leader for approval.

 

STEP 2:Research your individual to gain as in-depth an understanding of their approach to education, teaching and learning as you can. This research should demonstrate a use and compilation of books, professional journals, video and audio tapes, and internet websites.Indicate which databases you used to search for resources.You will need to be able to explain the individualís position in relation to:

What knowledge and skills are worthwhile learning?

What are the goals of education?

II.Theory of Knowledge

What is knowledge?

How is knowledge different from belief?

What is the perception of ìmistakesî?

What is a lie?

III.Theory of Human nature

What is a Human Being?

How do Human Beings differ from other species?

What are the limits of human potential?

What is the relative influence of environment (nurture) and heredity (nature)?

IV.Theory of Learning

What is learning?

How are skills and knowledge acquired?

V.Theory of Teaching

What is it to teach?

By what methods should we teach?

What will the curriculum be?

VI.Theory of Society and Opportunity

What is society?

Who is to be educated?(address issues of diversities)

Why do people disagree?

How is consent achieved?

Whose opinion takes precedence?

STEP 3:  After learning as much as you can about the issues above, design the ideal school based on this individualís beliefs and theories.Consider:

STEP 4: Your will present your research and ideal school in two ways:
  1. Your research about the individual will be presented as a web-page with both internal and external links, as well as bibliography
  1. The ideal school you create will be presented to the class. The presentation may be a power-point presentation, a poster session, simulated community or school board meeting. . . whatever you think will be effective to communicate your message about what the school should be and why.
