SEMINARS

So, You Want to Be a Teacher?

Winter 2003

We will be having 2 seminars a week during Winter quarter. One seminar will meet on Wednesday morning, focussing on the book of the week. The second seminar will be on Thursday afternoon. This seminar will be an integration seminar. The purpose of the second seminar will be to pull together the information and ideas from the workshops, lectures, book, and your experiences.

For Wednesday's seminars, you will be a member of one of the following four groups. These groups will all meet at the same time, in the same room, on the same day. Every other week, the group will meet with a faculty seminar leader. During the interim week, each group will work alone to discuss the book while developing and strengthening their skills in facilitating effective seminars.

On Thursday afternoons, Groups 1 & 2 will meet together with Sherry as facilitator. Groups 3 & 4 will meet together with Terry as facilitator.

We're going to use seminar passes this quarter rather than weekly papers. Each person will bring to seminar some type of response to a key issue or issues in the text for the week. The responses can take any form, including, but not limited to, expository essays. That is, you may write poetry, essays, or short stories, compose and perform music, draw, or create three-dimensional representations.

Each seminar will begin with a short piece of writing that answers a question, posed by S & T, about the book. Following the writing interlude, group members will share their representations as a means of entering into a conversation about the text, teaching, and learning.
