TEXT COMPARISON
OBJECTIVES:
1. To evaluate the text structures/patterns
of various reading materials and articulate how differing text structure
influences comprehension.
PROCEDURES:
1. Read McKenna & Robinson Chap 3
2. Choose: 1) a textbook, 2) a non-fiction
tradebook, 3) a narrative fiction book related to the theme you choose
for your unit plan. Critique each text on the following:
-
1. Analyze the TEXT PATTERN/STORY STRUCTURE.
-
2. Perform the READABILITY LEVEL using the
Raygor Test.
-
3. Create a CLOZE test for each.
**Make sure to include copies
of the passages and page numbers for each test.**
-
4. Assess the CONTEXT of your instruction.
(You may use the inventory in Figure 3.9, modify, or create your own.
3. Once you have gathered the data from items
1-4 above, the
ways in which these texts will fit into your classroom applications and
provide a rationale for your judgments. Consider the best uses for these
texts in your classroom, the strengths and weaknesses of each text, instructional
modifications and structural support you may need to apply.
You may format this analysis and comparison
in whatever way makes your meaning clear to you, and to an outside audience.
In other words, don't take for granted I will "know what you mean." Take
the time to explain/elaborate your decision-making process clearly and
concisely.
