"The Evergleaners, yeah that's a good name!" To glean is to gather what is left behind. What is left behind? Surplus crops from farms and community gardens that become waste because of such things as an over abundance of crops or no market value. It is the dream of The Evergleaners to help local organization The Gleaners Coalition to harvest those "left behind" crops and to deliver to homeless shelters, Food Not Bombs, and the Thurston County Food Bank to become hot meals for the hungry. Our desire to start this group stemmed from the inspiration of the Gleaners Coalition that provide a way for food to be distributed before going to waste. We, as an on-campus student group, started in late September of 2005 after gleaning for the first time with a friend from the Gleaners Coalition. We have created many ideas to help the Evergreen community understand the importance of gleaning and to volunteer with us. We hope through finding our own transportation we can have more gleaning trips throughout the harvest. We are mindful of the effort and time it takes into building a solid student group, and we are mindful that we have a choice to help alleviate hunger in our community. |
