Welcome to the Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives Art Gallery at The Evergreen State College.  The purpose of this site is to display the art work by students enrolled in this academic program during the year 1998-99.   This coordinated studies program was designed for first year students with varying levels of previous art experience.  We studied the lives and work of artists, writers, activists and religious people in 20th Century America in response to issues of their times.  The year was divided into three quarters:

We studied the works of Studs Terkel, Langston Hughes, Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton, Dorthea Lange, Jacob Lawrence, Judy Chicago, Primo Levi, Hannah Arendt, Malcolm X, John Steinbeck,  Art Speigleman, Carrie Mae Weems, bell hooks, and various other authors.  The students produced art work in response to visual images in literature and poetry and from their own writing..

This site allows you to view the art work by student artist or assignment, to examine our reading list, or to look at our program syllabus.  Just click on the menu bar located on the top or bottom of the screen.
