Eric M. Gustafson's photography is inspirational, surreal, and intense. His subject matter is not unusual; however, his presentation causes his art to be nothing short of breathtaking. The scenes are unreal in their color ranges, atmospheres, and perspectives.
Gustafson travels the world with his Olympus C8080 and a tripod to create these amazing works. Having lived in a variety of places, Seattle included, Eric is well traveled. He sees his work as art, not documentation. He claims his artwork to “exist as a very personal reflection of [him]self.”
The emotions within the photography of Eric Gustafson are intensified by his tendencies towards extreme perspectives and coloration. His skies seem endless and abandoned in his rural photographs. His photos carry a lot of emotional weight. They feel heavy, but are pleasing to behold. His colors are always intensified and saturated to create the surreal effect that is common of his photographs. In addition, the unusual perspectives with which he views the world complete his compositions stunningly. He seems to know exactly how to get an amazing perspective out of a scene or an object; exactly what focal length to use, and precisely where to crop the image so that it feels complete.
Eric is very successful in his experimentation with, and mastering of the digital processes involved in creating photographic artwork. He has an eye for good composition, a mission to create a surreal world, and the skill set needed to combine the two into a successful photograph. His artwork is self categorized as “Anti limit” artwork. By which I believe he intends to portray that there is no limit to the magic and emotions that can be found throughout the world if you look in the correct manner.
