Building and Using
the Universal Library
Faculty Evaluation

Randy Stilson, Evergreen's (hereditary) Archivist
was the cornerstone to the program Building and Using the Universal Library. Because
of his encouragement and efforts in that program, my own intentions of continuing
my studies in Library Sciences are now more concrete. He has been a careful observer
of the ebb and flow of our seminar, and an excellent facilitator in our understanding
of the history and future of the Library as an institution. Of the faculty team,
his were the more effective lectures, even when the material was dense, obtuse
or shrouded in the mists of time.
I particularly enjoyed our seminars on the poetry in Index on Censorship.
Without his attention to these readings I would have likely missed many of the
subtle meanings intrinsic to the author's words. His comments on my response papers
and my research paper were encouraging. His request to use my work as a model
for other students was a compliment, which will remain a cherished memory of my
work in the program.
I would highly encourage anyone interested in the Library Sciences to work with
Randy, as his understanding and wisdom of the subject material is phenomenal,
as is his approach to imparting that knowledge to his students. With his help,
and those he comes into contact with, the Library of the Future will thrive and
grow as a powerful and enduring democratic institution.
