Pre-Assessment: |
Free Choice Centers are an extension to the guided center work that takes place in our classroom. Free Choice Centers allow students to be self directed learners. The classroom centers are open for exploration, investigation, and active learning. This hands on learning is in itself a pre-assessment for other activities that take place in our classroom. It also acts as a form of assessment for individual skills. The teacher is free to engage students through play and to make observations about student learning. |
| Teaching Procedures: | Materials: The materials at each center are site specific and are changed periodically depending on student involvement, thematic approach, skill attainment and development. |
| Duration: | Free choice centers are offered two times a week at minimum. The duration of free choice centers usually lasts between a half hour - 45 minutes. Students are free to move about the room during this time and engage in as many center activities as they are interested in. Clean up usually takes about 15 minutes of this time. |
| Assessment Procedures: | Assessment procedure vary from center to center and focus activity to focus activity. Centers are geared toward a development approach so assessment also varies from student to student. Assessment is also organized through play and is progressive. |
