Bio
I am a professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. I'm also co-director of the Center for Urban Simulation and Policy Analysis, adjunct professor in the Information School, and a member of the Interdisciplinary PhD program in Urban Design and Planning (all at the University of Washington), and a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery. I received a BA degree from Reed College in mathematics 1971, and a PhD from Stanford University in Computer Science in 1979. After spending a year in Edinburgh, I moved to the University of Washington in 1980. My current research interests are in human-computer interaction, particularly as applied to land use, transportation, and environmental modeling, and in integrating considerations of human values with computer system design. I have also done work in constraint-based languages and systems, other aspects of human-computer interaction, and in object-oriented programming.
Work:
My research currently centers around UrbanSim, an integrated modeling environment for urban land use, transportation, and environmental impacts. Indicators are the primary mechanism we employ to make the results of the simulations available to decision makers, planners, and interested citizens. We are also working on other web-based tools to open up the black box of simulation, and make it easier to interact with and experiment with the system.
