Staff Computer Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Chair, ISO/IEC JTC1/SC 32 - Data Management and Interchange. Helping to organize Ecoinformatics projects for the Interagency/International Cooperation on Ecoinformatics (EPA, EEA, USGS, GBIF, UNEP, and others). Involved with research to extend metadata registries to provide semantic services for health and the environment.
Work:
Currently working on projects to make environmental vocabularies (concept systems & terminologies, e.g., taxonomies, ontologies) available for use in semantics based computing such as the semantic web. Working with Interagency/International Cooperation on Ecoinformatics participants on several projects involving information systems, metadata registries, XML based information exchange, and terminology. Organizing Eighth International Open Forum on Metadata Registries, with focus this year (April 2005) on Semantic interoperability and services.
