Bio

Dawn Wright is a professor of Geography and Oceanography at OSU, where she has been on the faculty since 1995, and is now a participating faculty member in OSU's new IGERT in Ecosystem Informatics. She received her Ph.D. in Physical Geography and Marine Geology from the University of California-Santa Barbara in 1994. Dawn's research interests include geographic information science, marine geography, tectonics of mid-ocean ridges, and the processing and interpretation of high-resolution bathymetric, video, and underwater photographic images. She has completed oceanographic fieldwork in some of the most geologically-active regions of planet, including volcanoes under the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and has had 3 dives in the Alvin submersible. For the past three years she has been working on the Oregon Coastal Atlas, an NSF Digital Government Project, in collaboration with the State of Oregon Ocean-Coastal Management Program and the environmental organization Ecotrust.

Work:

The Oregon Coastal Atlas project covers the areas of tools, integration, and data quality, and we are working on extending the atlas in the areas of (from NSF SEIII):

"Reconciling heterogeneous formats schemas and ontologies: different ways of representing data and/or knowledge about the world, different terminologies and spellings, different representation mechanisms, even different access methods and policies. ...

Web semantics: defining and linking data on the web in a way that it can be used by machines not just for display purposes, but so that it can be found more readily, and used for automation, integration and reuse of data across various applications.
