Bio
I've been an information management consultant since 1998. As a consultant I've worked principally with US and European natural resource agencies providing data management planning support and user needs assessments. Prior to 1998, I was the director of the World Forest Institute in Portland, a non-profit international forest information brokerage organization. Born in SW Oregon, studied forest management and forest economics at Colorado State University and University of Washington, spent four years in several African nations working in natural resource program planning and management. Based in Stillwater, Minnesota. Married with two kids. Professional dream: a user-friendly, interactive metadata development system.
Work:
Current and recent work has focused on facilitating the improvement of natural resource information collection, archiving, access, exchange and use by US and International agencies. Projects include:
- Investigating obstacles to, and outlining strategies for improving, FGDC metadata development.
- Conducting a metadata users assessment for NBII.
- Taskforce member and consultant to the International Union of Forest Research Organization's Global Forest Information Service.
- Metadata and controlled vocabulary coordinator for the establishment of the Network of European Forest Information Systems.
- Providing design and advice to the US Forest Service's research stations in the implementation of a national user need assessment for the development of a centralized forest research information clearinghouse.
- Conducting provider capacity and user needs assessment for the US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station's Communication Division.
