- Bio
- Lois Delcambre is a Professor of Computer Science at Portland State University. She also has a joint appointment as a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the OGI School of Science and Engineering at the Oregon Health & Science University. She works in the database field of computer science with a particular interest in database data models as well as other models for structured information including thesaurus models, knowledge representation models, semi-structured models such as XML and RDF, and ontology models.
- She is a principal investigator for the "Harvesting Information to Sustain our Forests" project, funded by the US National Science Foundation, Digital Government Program where the team is building a digital library for natural resource managers, in conjunction with the USDA Forest Service in the US. The unique contribution of this work is the use of a non-standard thesaurus model that permits terms to appear in multiple places in the broader-term/narrower-term hierarchy. She is also principal investigator for a new NSF-funded project that will investigate the use of superimposed tools in education.
- Dr. Delcambre received her PhD in Computer Science from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now named the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) in 1982, her MS in Mathematics from Clemson University in 1974, and her BS in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1972. From 1974 to 1979, she was a Systems Design and Software Development Manger at the Division of Information Systems Development at Clemson University.
- Work:
- I am interested in data modeling, data representation, data integration, and data transformation, in general. I have some exposure to various kinds of scientific data in various research probjects, including collaboration with Nalini Nadkarni and Judith Cushing concerning database support for forest canopy scientists.
