- Dr. Richard W. Guldin is Staff Director for Science Policy, Planning, Inventory, and Information for the Research & Development arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service. Among his duties are:
- - Finding ways to more effectively bring recent research results to the policy making process to provide a firmer foundation for practicing science-based natural resources management.
- - Leading the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program. The FIA program monitors the status, health condition, and productivity of forests on all private and public lands in the United States.
- - Leading national and international assessments of sustainable forests, based on the 7 criteria and 67 indicators for temperate and boreal forests agreed to by the 13 Montreal Process countries.
- - Focusing on R&D information management policies, including protocols for quality assurance and quality control, archiving long-term data, use of geospatial information, and scientific ethics.
- He is a Certified Forester and a Registered Professional Forester.
- Work:
- I led the development of the National Report on Sustainable Forests, based on 7 criteria and 67 indicators adopted by the U.S. and 12 other countries. I have participated in most of the ongoing national and international scale criteria and indicator processes pertaining to forests as a technical expert supporting the U.S. Dept. of State in international meetings and negotiations. I lead a major task force for the International Union of Forest Research Organizations on the forest science-policy interface, seeking to identify guidelines to improve the relevance and use of science by forest policy makers and train both researchers and policy makers to use more effective ways to move information across the interface.
