Leaf and Bark Rubbings

To make leaf rubbings you will need.......

                regular copy paper
                Crayons with the paper removed
                Trees
                Leaves

Directions:
                1. Find a hard surface
                2. Place the leaves flat on the hard surface
                3. Put a piece of paper on top of the leaves
                4. Rub the long-side of the crayon over the paper

Soon you will begin to see the outline of the leaf.  Try all different shapes and sizes of leaves.  Here are some questions to ask yourself about the leaves:

Where did each leaf come from? Where do you think that leaf was in the canopy of the forest?
Why are some leaves fuzzy and others not? How does the fuzziness of a leaf affect its ability to hold water?
Why are some leaves pointed like a needle and others flat like paper?
How do each of these leaves capture rain drops?
Are all the leaves of one tree the same? How are they different?
Are any of the leaves discolored or missing a piece?  What caused these irregularities in the leaf?

Activity Variation:
             1.   Make a bark rubbing by taping the paper onto a tree and rubbing it with a crayon
just as you did in the leaf rubbing.
            2. Make a leaf or bark rubbing on a small piece of paper and paste it on a card.
