Slide 11.
Amanita smithiana is a woodland Amanita containing unknown toxins that cause kidney failure and can be lethal. The volva is somewhat powdery and readily disappears thus causing occasional confusion with some of the edible white mushrooms, notably the White Matsutake. Take careful note of the shape of the stipe of Amanita smithiana and compare it to the next species.
