Amanita lanei, found in most books as Amanita calyptroderma, is commonly known as Coccora. Amanita lanei is a choice edible species that I find occasionally in Western North America but have never had the nerve to eat. It is a popular edible in Northern California but periodically some people will mistakenly gather one of the highly similar deadly Amanita species and pay for the experience with loss life, or loss of liver and sometimes kidney function. Coccora is strictly for gamblers. Remember, there are old mushroom hunters, there are bold mushroom hunters, but there are no old bold mushroom hunters.
