Clitocybe nuda or Lepista nuda is a choice edible species that can be correctly identified if you are careful and observant. Lepista nuda is a fleshy mushroom that appears to change coloration from purplish to tan as you rotate it in the light. The spore print is pinkish buff. It grows throughout North America in rich ground mainly in open areas and at the edge of the woods. If consumed raw, Lepista nuda can cause serious poisoning. Once cooked, it is one of my favorites. Try it skewered and roasted over a grill.
