Pholiota squarrosoides is a widespread species that grows in huge clusters on hardwoods. While generally listed as edible, it has a flavor similar to a marshmallow without sugar. Pholiota squarrosa looks a lot like Pholiota squarrosoides except that it has a dry cap instead of a viscid cap and Pholiota squarrosa can cause gastrointestinal distress in some individuals.
