Angel Wings, Pleurocybella porrigens, is a smaller pure white oyster-like mushroom that grows in abundance on rotting conifers, especially Hemlock. Pleurocybella porrigens has a distinct and unusual flavor that I enjoy. It is a small species but sometimes fruits in such abundance that it is worth collecting for the table. However, in the fall of 2004 in Japan there were over 15 fatalities from mostly elderly Japanese, all who had malfunctioning kidneys and who ate large quantities of this species. It is not a good idea to eat large quantities of any mushroom.
