Lactarius peckii is a fire-hot species found in the East. There are similar mild-tasting Lactarius species that can be eaten, but steer clear of the hot ones like Lactarius peckii. Lactarius is a large genus characterized by mushrooms with brittle flesh that exudes latex when cut. While there are many members of the genus, noting the cap color coupled with the color and color changes of the latex and taste can often lead to a correct identification without having to use a microscope.
