Fomitopsis pinicola is a perennial conk, one of the many polypores that rot wood. It is found on more than 100 species of host trees. Fomitopsis pinicola would be a perfectly edible mushroom except for the fact that it is as hard and tough as wood. The wood-rotters are a large and varied group. Some species are used in alternative medicine by grinding and making a tea. The polysaccharides that are extracted in the tea can boost the immune system.
