Introduction to Fall Mushrooms

The King Bolete, Boletus edulis, here admired by Cathy Cripps, is one of the most highly prized edible mushrooms. Boletus edulis is a distinctive species. The top of the stem is netted in a fishnet pattern and the stem is usually huge and swollen. When young and prime for eating, the tube mouths are covered over with a white material. Unfortunately, it is soon riddled with fly larvae so you have to be lucky to find good ones (or be willing to just consider the fly larvae added protein).
