Vascellum lloydianum is a typical small puffball. Puffballs range in size from a few millimeters in diameter to some that will barely fit in a bushel basket. All are edible and some are choice. Cut puffballs from top to bottom through the middle to make certain that you do not have a young Amanita. Amanita species in the button stage will reveal a developing cap and stem when cut from top to bottom. Also make certain that the interior is still white - older puffballs will turn greenish or brownish and will be bitter and not edible. Finally make certain that the flesh both looks like a marshmallow and is soft like a marshmallow. Similar Scleroderma species are hard inside, not marshmallow soft.
