Hericium abietis is a tooth mushroom that has forgone a cap and appears as a spectacular cascade at the end of a log or growing on the side of a standing tree. The distinctive but hard to describe smell will help lead you to more once you have found one. Hericium abietis is a choice edible that grows on conifers. Hericium americanum is a choice look-alike that grows on hardwoods and conifers. Similar species also include the two choice edibles Hericium erinaceus and Hericium coralloides, more commonly known as Hericium ramosum. These are all what I call 55 mile an hour mushrooms - I can spot them and correctly identify them from the car at cruising speed. A prime specimen can fill a bushel basket.
