Auricularia auricula, known as Tree-Ear, Wood-Ear and many other common names, is a rubbery flavorless edible that is never-the-less a prized ingredient in some Asian cooking, especially in Sechuan Chinese restaurants. Its close relative Auricularia polytrichia is cultivated in Asia and available dried in stores. Auricularia auricula is found wild growing on conifers and sometimes on deciduous wood in both spring and fall seasons. It contains an anticoagulant that may help prevent coronary artery disease but also causes people to bruise easily and to bleed more than normal when cut or during menstrual cycles.
