Scleroderma citrinum develops underground and can be mistaken for a truffle. Indeed in Europe Scleroderma species are sometimes sold to unsuspecting buyers as truffles. Scleroderma species can also appear at the surface of the ground and be mistaken for one of the thick-skinned puffballs. When very young the firm gleba inside a Scleroderma is still white, though it soon turns purple to brown or black. The problem is that many Scleroderma species cause rapid onset of severe vomiting and diarrhea. Deaths have been reported from consumption of Sclerodermas.
