Shopping at the farmer's market one day, I found these two specimens for sale as puffballs. Note that when cut through the middle, one reveals developing gills and stipe indicative of an Amanita, in this case an Amanita muscaria button. The other was a thick-skinned puffball, Calvatia fumosa, which is technically edible but has a foul odor.
