Amanita muscaria var. muscaria is one of the very abundant and widespread large showy mushrooms of northern temperate forests. Amanita muscaria is the mushroom of Alice and Wonderland and the mushroom illustrated in many children's books. It held an important place in Shamanistic rituals and is an inebriant that causes changes in perception of time and space as well as vomiting, diarrhea and deep coma-like sleep. Amanita muscaria comes in red, orange, yellow, white and even brown-capped varieties. The pattern of rings at the somewhat swollen base of the stipe is distinctive for this species.
