Lepiota rachodes is a highly prized and widespread choice edible species that can reach the size of a dinner plate. It has a white spore-print and stains a distinctive bright orange-red then slowly brown when bruised. It grows on well-manured ground, compost piles and large anthills. The similar Lepiota americana grows in clusters and when young bruises yellow then slowly reddish. Lepiota rachodes and Lepiota americana are edibles that I cannot eat without stomach ache. Also be certain that you do not have a very similar but poisonous green-spored Chlorophyllum molybdites.
