Pseudorhizina californica most commonly known as Gyromitra californica , the Umbrella False Morel, is a widespread species fruiting in late spring and summer, even into the fall, mainly in the Pacific Northwest and the Rocky Mountains. The cap color is rather variable as is the amount of pinkish tinting on the stalk. While it can be locally abundant, I have only encountered it once. Because it is known to contain a complex of monomethyl hydrazine, the consumption of Pseudorhizina californica should be likened to playing Russian roulette.
