Slide 15.
Disciotis venosa is an edible species closely related
to the morels and with a flavor very similar to the morels. It is most
often found in well-drained riparian areas and is widely distributed, though
rarely abundant. Unfortunately, there are many highly similar species in
several different genera and it takes a microscope or considerable practice
to correctly identify this species. Like all of the Morels, Gyromitras,
Helvellas, Pezizas and Discinas that I am aware of, it is poisonous when
raw and must be thoroughly cooked. Under the microscope look for eguttulate
spores and external polar granules.
