Sarcoscypha coccinea, the Scarlet Cup, is a fairly common and widely distributed late Winter and early Spring species. It is most often found on hardwood twigs and branches in riparian areas. Sarcoscypha coccinea is reportedly edible though I have never found it in enough quantity to be tempted to try it.
