Sarcosphaera coronaria , The Violet Star Cup, has been known as Sarcosphaera crassa and Sarcosphaerea exima. It starts out as an round to egg-shaped hollow ball just under the surface of the earth. As it matures, the inner surface changes from pale white to pinkish or violet and the top splits open in a tulip shape. It is a widespread species appearing under conifers in the spring and summer, especially in the Rocky Mountains and the Cascades. Sarcosphaera coronaria has a texture likened to an old rubber eraser and has been known to cause mild poisoning when consumed.
