Verpa conica , the Bell Morel, is distinguished by having a smooth cap hanging like a skirt from the top of the stem. It is common in the Eastern United States but rare in the West. I found one large fruiting in April under wild cherry trees and since there were not many local reports on its edibility, I tried it out on a class. Everyone enjoyed it and no one got sick, so I can report with some confidence that it is a good edible.
