This Hydnotrya is one of about 12 species and is related to the genus Helvella. The odor can be not distinctive to strongly garlicky - this Hydnotrya specimen smelled of raw potatoes. I have no reports on edibility. Hydnotrya fruit throughout North Temperate forest zones, some appearing spring only and others in the autumn only while still others fruit both seasons. They are often growing in or near rotting conifer wood. Indeed, true and false truffles are often found near rotting wood which provides a moisture reservoir or sponge to sustain the mushrooms through dry periods.
