Rhizopogon vulgaris is one of over 150 species of underground false truffles related to the genus Suillus. They can be found with species of the pinacea throughout the year except when the weather is too cold or too dry. All species are edible but are far more attractive as food for small mammals, especially flying squirrels, than for humans. Their taste is pleasant but not exciting.
