Rhizopogon ellenae is one of several species that stains
dingy purplish or pinkish-gray to fuscous when handled or in age. The name
Rhizopogon means root-beard in reference to the abundant rhizomorphs that
cover the sporocarps of many of the members of the genus. Rhizopogons are
readily found around pines where they are often poking up through the soil.
Like most of the truffles and false truffles they grow right at the bottom
of the duff layer of the forest floor and just above the mineral soil.
The true and the false truffles are all mycorrhizal species and will be
found in the region of actively growing feeder roots. They are not deeply
buried.
