Melanogaster means black stomach in reference to the
black gleba found in most of the 19 species known from northern temperate
forests where they grow in ectomycorrhizal association with conifers and
hardwoods in either spring or fall. The black gel-filled chambers are separated
by white to pale yellowish brown chamber walls. The odor can be fruity
or garlicky or nauseous sweet-oily. Melanogaster has been
used in Europe as a cheap substitute for truffles.
