Calbovista subsculpta is a common spring summer and early
fall inhabitant of open areas or grassy places near woods in western mountainous
regions. It can be as large as a partially flattened volleyball. The warts
look like they are off of a pineapple and are much less pronounced than
the warts of Calvatia sculpta. At maturity, the gleba turns
to a dark olive powdery mass leaving isolated warts to fall off and decompose.
When young and pure white inside, Calbovista subsculpta is
an edible species and it can be found in substantial quantity.
