Hygrophorus purpurascens is one of several very similar common purple-red Hygrophorus species found in western mountains. Hygrophorus purpurascens and most look-alikes except Hygrophorus russula, are found under conifers. Hygrophorus purpurascens shows up in the mountains in late spring and sometimes can be found into the fall. It is edible and prized by some. Some consider it almost flavorless. Watch out for bitter look-alikes like Hygrophorus amarus which tends to develop pale to bright yellow tones in age.
