The lilac-spored variant of Pleurotus ostreatus, shown here, has also been known as Pleurotus sapidus. There are variants of oyster mushrooms with a bluish- or greenish tinted cap, a pink cap and a bright yellow cap as well as the normal off-white to tan capped variants. Several species are recognized and one typically gets bigger than a dinner plate. They all grow in a shelving fashion on wood and can be very abundant. If you have a leaky roof or a wet basement, look for them growing out of your chairs or piles of damp magazines.
