What has been known as Morchella esculenta , the Yellow Morel, is another very widely distributed species complex, showing up in woods, along streams, in orchards, burns, and rich drainage areas. One of the best places to find it is under hardwoods in May, especially in eastern North America around elms that have been attacked by Dutch elm disease. Some people consider that Morchella crassipes and Morchella deliciosa are just varieties of Morchella esculenta. In any case, all three of these species or varieties are avidly sought for the table and there is no currently accepted scientific name, so you can simply refer to these as yellow morels.
